About Melissa Billen

Melissa's design philosophy

For the last 26 years I have created interiors for a variety of clients from blue chip organisations to high end residential clients. My main aim is to complete a scheme to the highest level of design and finish whilst answering the client’s brief. I do not have a ‘house style’ but I create a ‘style’ that is right for both project and client. The interior design must ‘work’ with the architectural style of the existing building. All finishes need to reflect the surrounding environment and must be ‘right’ for the client and how the spaces are to be used. Longevity of design is paramount, avoiding ‘fashion’ statements unless they are right for the scheme.

Attention to detail is key, whether it be a bespoke piece of furniture or how two finishes blend together. I love colour whether it be mixing different natural tones or adding strong primary colours to a scheme. Proportion and scale are important in creating vistas with furniture selection, lighting and artwork that lead you through a space. Pushing the boundaries of my knowledge is essential to continual development.

You are always learning and only as good as your last project and client testimonial.

The way we work

Projects begin with an initial meeting to understand your needs, wants, ideas and priorities, along with the general location, physical aspects and intended use of the space.
Our Service Proposal follows and sets out the design brief, client budget and timescale, scope and detail of our work, deliverables and fees. The requirement for the involvement of other professional disciplines e.g. structural engineers is highlighted at this stage. We are always clear about the structure of our fees.

Our bespoke designs for commercial clients are influenced by the branding, style and sensory impact they want to achieve in their premises. Bespoke designs for domestic clients will be influenced by the information gained from the client.

We actively involve ourselves in continuous improvement of our knowledge and skills in interior design via printed and on-line media, seminars and exhibitions and project driven learning.

We regularly deliver talks on interior design to local interest groups.
